L’APSO est ravi d’annoncer un événement d’apprentissage professionnel virtuel qui aura lieu le vendredi 26 novembre et le samedi 27 novembre 2021. Cet événement « éphémère » de l’APSO, sur le thème Avancer, ensemble – Une expérience de l’APSO, est une opportunité de réengager les enseignants de sciences de la maternelle à la 12e année. L’événement est une occasion pour les participants d’assister aux présentations des conférenciers vedettes, d’engager à des conversations critiques, de partager des pratiques innovantes et d’emporter des stratégies qui peuvent être intégrées à leurs pratique d’enseignement. Les sessions comprendront des expériences pratiques, des discussions animées et de nombreuses nouvelles ressources!

Les grands axes de cet événement sont les suivants :

  • l’éducation pour le développement durable;
  • la définition de l’équité pour les sciences;
  • les leçons apprises pendant l’enseignement virtuel des sciences; 
  • meilleures pratiques en STIM / enseignement des sciences.

Toutes les séances enregistrées seront disponibles pour les participants à la conférence pendant trois mois après la fin de la conférence.

La majorité des séances de la conférence seront offertes en anglais, et un certain nombre seront offertes en français. Tous les participants de la conférence auront accès à toutes les séances enregistrées pour une durée de trois mois après la fin de la conférence. Plus de détails sur le programme seront annoncés sous peu!

Eugenia Addy HeadshotDr. Eugenia Addy is the CEO of Visions of Science, a charitable organization with the mission oftransforming communities, society, and the planet through equitable access to STEM. In herrole, she leads the organization in facilitating community-based youth engagement,strengthening youth support networks, and advocating for broader systems change. She hasover 15 years of experience working with youth and developing numerous city-wideengagement programs from several different communities across the Greater Toronto Area. Sheis an educator, speaker, community organizer and advocate who is passionate about creatingmeaningful opportunities for youth to achieve their full potential.
Eugenia is a board member for the Ontario Science Centre, the Toronto Foundation and theTelus GTA Community Board. She holds both an honours bachelor degree in Chemistry andBiology and a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Toronto.

Tanja HeadshotDr. Tanja Tajmel is Associate Professor at the Centre for Engineering in Society, Gina Cody School of Engineering and Computer Science, Concordia University, Montreal, and holds a Tier 2 Concordia University Research Chair in “Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)”.

She earned her Doctorate in Didactics of Physics at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (Germany) and holds a M.Sc. in Physics and Philosophy, Karl-Franzens-University Graz (Austria) where she also studied Meteorology and Geophysics. Before joining Concordia University in 2018, Dr. Tajmel was professor at the University of Education Upper Austria. In December 2019, she was visiting professor at the University of São Paulo, Brazil. 

Since many years, Dr. Tajmel has been engaged in implementing principles of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) and in mentoring and empowering students from marginalized groups. Her work focusses on studying EDI in science and technology, the relation of colonialism and science, “othering” and practices of exclusion in science, the role of language in these processes, and on the development of decolonized curricula and courses in the STEM fields. She closely collaborates with human rights experts and UNESCO and has a broad international network.

In 2005, Dr. Tajmel founded the first European program to support migrant students at physics departments at four European Universities (Humboldt-University Berlin/Germany, University of Vienna/Austria, Yildiz Technical University Istanbul/Turkey, and University of Sarajevo/Bosnia-Herzegovina), named PROMISE (“Promotion of Migrants in Science Education”). PROMISE was funded by the European Commission and by Germany’s Employers’ Association in the Metal and Electrical Engineering Industries (Deutsche Gesamtmetall). As part of this project, Dr. Tajmel initiated “Club Lise” (named after Lise Meitner), the first European mentoring program for migrant women in STEM.

Dr. Tajmel is involved in several national and international projects. She is Principal Investigator in the project “Decolonizing Light – tracing and countering colonialism in contemporary physics”, funded by Tri-Agency’s NFRF Exploration fund, where she collaborates across disciplines with international scholars from physics, Indigenous studies, sociology, education, and STS (science and technology studies), Indigenous communities and the Kahnawá:ke Environment Protection Office. She is closely collaborating with the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering at Concordia University and Co-Principal Investigator of project “SE4AI”, in which she is training graduate software engineering students to consider EDI and social aspects of artificial intelligence.

In 2020, Dr. Tajmel established the EDI Research Lab at Gina Cody School of Engineering and Computer Science. 

In 2018, she co-authored together with UNESCO the Declaration on the Human Right to Science Education, which was adopted at the first international symposium on Human rights and Equality in STEM education, which took place at the Academy of the Sciences in Berlin 2018. 

Dr. Tajmel is publishing in German and English. She authored/co-authored 8 books and several book chapters and journal papers. Her new book, “The Human Rights-Based Approach to STEM Education”, has been published in September 2021.

Janice Williams HeadshotJanice Williams is a teacher, equity practitioner, Global Goals Ambassador and consultant working in various capacities in the K-12 public education sector. She is a twice certified educator and holds several degrees from Western University and McGill University. Janice brings to her practice, a sociocultural consciousness that has been developed and refined through her many professional and personal experiences living and working in Canada. Her work aims to cultivate ecosystems of learning where learners can apply funds of knowledge to discover their science identity. She consults with school boards and ministries on science curriculum, serves as a Board Director at Let’s Talk Science, and is an active STAO volunteer with the aim of making science learning communities a place where all people can feel that they belong.
