This is an introductory lesson to a unit on matter and introduces key concepts about
matter. The goal of the lesson is to provide the foundational concepts that students will need to take a
deeper dive into changes in states of matter and physical and chemical changes. In this lesson, students will
build on what they learned in Grade 2 regarding solids and liquids, deepen their understanding of what
matter is, the different forms of matter, and how to describe it. This will be accomplished through a variety
of hands-on activities including observing and manipulating objects to discover different properties of and
specific characteristics of matter.
The lesson may be conducted over one or two periods depending on the available time.
