The Sea Organ in Zadar, designed by architect Nikola Basic and opened in April 2005, is a unique blend of urban architecture and musical instrument. Located on Zadar’s Riva, it uses 35 polyethylene pipes of varying lengths and sizes to capture the movement of the waves and transform it into music. The pipes, embedded in stone stairs along the coast, produce sounds that evoke the sea, wind, and sky.
The Sea Organ’s seven sound clusters are organized around two major key chords, reminiscent of Dalmatian klapa music. This innovative project won the European Prize for Urban Public Space in 2006 and, along with the adjacent Greeting to the Sun, is one of Zadar’s most beloved monuments. The white marble steps also offer a beautiful vantage point for enjoying Zadar’s sunsets.
