The recycling symbol was designed in 1970 by Gary Anderson, a senior at the University of Southern California, for a contest sponsored by the Container Corporation of America. The symbol, inspired by the Mobius loop discovered by August Ferdinand Mobius in 1858, consists of three chasing arrows forming a triangle. Each arrow represents a step in the recycling process: collection of recyclable materials, manufacturing them into new products, and purchasing and using these recycled products. This closed loop emphasizes the importance of reducing, reusing, and recycling.
