The “immortal” jellyfish (Turritopsis dohrnii) can cheat death by reverting to an earlier life stage after dying. When the medusa stage jellyfish dies, it sinks to the ocean floor, decays, and its cells reaggregate into polyps, which then produce new jellyfish. This process, known as cellular transdifferentiation, allows the jellyfish to regenerate repeatedly. Other jellyfish species, like the moon jellyfish, have also shown similar regenerative abilities. While this discovery is fascinating, its application to human immortality remains uncertain.
