Please visit the Gateway Arch website for more information and this YouTube Video Riding To The Top Of The Gateway Arch In The Tram Car: What It’s Like & What You Can See Of St. Louis.
The Gateway Arch National Park, established in 1935, commemorates Thomas Jefferson’s vision of a transcontinental United States. It spans from the Old Courthouse to the Mississippi River, with the iconic Gateway Arch symbolizing the pioneering spirit.
The park celebrates key historical figures: Thomas Jefferson, who negotiated the Louisiana Purchase; explorers Lewis & Clark and their guide Sacagawea; civil rights challengers Dred and Harriet Scott; and suffragette Virginia Minor. Architect Eero Saarinen designed the Arch, completed in 1965, as a tribute to these figures.
The Old Courthouse, built in 1839, is notable for landmark civil rights cases, including the Dred Scott decision, which played a role in sparking the U.S. Civil War. The Gateway Arch stands as a symbol of national identity and mid-century modern design.
