Welcome to the STEAM-3D Maker Lab!
The STEAM-3D Maker Lab, led by Dr. Janette Hughes, Canada Research Chair in Technology and Pedagogy, focuses on developing and assessing innovative educational approaches known as “production pedagogies.” These approaches aim to enhance students’ digital literacy and competencies, particularly in marginalized communities, while promoting civic engagement, service learning, and social justice.
The lab investigates how “maker cultures”—which involve the creation and development of digital products—impact students, teachers, and the broader community. It seeks to build capacity for change and innovation in both formal and informal educational settings using emerging digital media and interactive tools.
What is a Makerspace?
A makerspace is a collaborative and learner-centered environment where people engage in problem-solving, creativity, and hands-on projects using digital and physical materials. It emphasizes collaboration, resilience, and real-world problem-solving.
Purpose of the Makerspace at Ontario Tech University
The makerspace at Ontario Tech University aims to keep pace with advancements in digital technologies like 3D printing, which are becoming more accessible outside traditional business and manufacturing sectors. It aligns with contemporary educational practices and reflects the evolving needs of students by integrating 21st-century skills into learning.
Goals of the Makerspace
- Develop and evaluate constructionist pedagogies.
- Enhance students’ digital literacy and competencies.
- Promote civic engagement and social justice through making.
- Facilitate the creation of digital products for educational and community use.
- Build capacity for educational change and innovation with emerging tools.
- Increase interest in STEM through literacy and the arts.
