Welcome to STAO Ignites 2024
For over 130 years, STAO has been a leader and advocate for professional development opportunities for its members, which include annual conferences, workshops, webinars, and certificate programs.
STAO conferences bring together excellent and passionate science educators from across the province who are interested in sharing their ideas, experiences, and successes in the science and STEM classroom.
A STAO conference is an opportunity to come together and learn with and from each other about how we can ensure that ALL students across Ontario are able to participate in and access quality science and STEM education.
STAO Ignites 2024 is designed primarily for secondary school educators in their first five years of teaching or new to science teaching and aims to empower novice science and STEM teachers with the latest innovations and pedagogical practices. We also warmly welcome experienced educators who are looking to stay current with new teaching strategies and collaborate with peers. The goal of this conference is to build inclusive, engaging, and effective learning
STAO Ignites 2024: Sparking Innovative and Inclusive Science Teaching
In the spirit of sparking innovative and inclusive science teaching, the STAO Ignites 2024 conference focuses on supporting secondary school educators in 5 key areas:
- Culturally Responsive and Relevant pedagogy (CRRP) and Equity in Science
- Grade 9 destreamed science
- Alternative approaches to engage learners (e.g., design thinking, thinking classrooms, inquiry, problem-based learning)
- Coding and AI in the science curriculum
- Safe laboratory practices in the classroom.
