Trevor Porter, a professor at the University of Toronto Mississauga, is using tree rings to study how Canada’s Arctic climate has changed over the past 1,000 years. By analyzing tree rings from the Yukon and Northwest Territories, Porter aims to create a detailed climate chronology that predates modern weather records. Tree rings provide precise, annual data on past weather patterns. Porter’s team has so far built a 913-year record and aims to extend it further by finding preserved dead trees. This research helps understand historical climate changes and predict future Arctic conditions.
