Griffith Observatory, which opened in 1935, is the world’s most-visited public observatory. It was inspired by Griffith J. Griffith, who also founded Griffith Park. The Observatory has provided opportunities for observation, learning, and inspiration to visitors from Southern California and around the world. It underwent significant renovation and expansion from 2002-2006, enhancing Griffith’s original vision. Since reopening, it has reached larger audiences through in-person visits, online presence, and media. In 2020, the Observatory celebrated its 85th anniversary.
