Scientists have discovered that oxygen is being produced deep on the Pacific Ocean floor, even in complete darkness where sunlight doesn’t reach. This unexpected finding suggests that certain minerals on the seafloor, known as polymetallic nodules, might be causing a chemical reaction that splits water molecules to release oxygen. This process, called “dark oxygen production,” could have important implications for understanding life in deep-sea environments and the Earth’s oxygen cycle.
