Count Me In 2025: Building Bridges Between Math, Science, and Technology

On Wednesday, August 27, 2025, Mathematics Outreach at the University of Toronto hosted the Count Me In Educator Conference at OISE. This complimentary, one-day professional learning event brought together more than 200 educators from across Ontario to explore new ways of making mathematics more engaging, inclusive, and accessible for all students.

Funded by the NSERC PromoScience grant and supported by OISE’s Department of Curriculum, Teaching, and Learning, the Count Me In program is designed to reduce math anxiety in the classroom and to build confidence for both students and teachers. Count Me In supports diverse learners and aims to help educators foster positive math identities.

The 2025 conference featured a keynote session, three rotating workshop blocks, and an optional networking session. Across the day, participants could select to engage in 3 out of 12 unique workshops, covering a wide range of topics from reducing math anxiety and fostering student confidence, to creative strategies for teaching math beyond the curriculum.

STAO at Count Me In 2025

STAO was thrilled to take part in this year’s conference with an exhibitor booth during lunch and the afternoon networking session. Our team engaged with many educators around topics that connect science, technology, mathematics, and STEM pedagogy. These conversations reinforced how closely science and technology link with mathematical learning—whether through data analysis, problem solving, or inquiry-based instructional strategies.

Educators visiting the STAO booth explored:

  • How science and technology investigations can strengthen mathematical reasoning.
  • The role of engineering design challenges in applying math concepts in meaningful, real-world contexts.
  • Cross-curricular opportunities that highlight the natural overlap between math, science, and STEM skills.
  • Resources and upcoming STAO professional learning to support classroom practice.

Why This Matters

The Count Me In initiative reminds us that building student confidence in math is not separate from science or technology—it’s deeply connected. When students see math as a tool for exploring scientific questions, designing solutions, and engaging with technology, they experience it as a living, applicable discipline rather than an isolated subject.

By participating in Count Me In 2025, STAO was able to connect with math educators across Ontario and continue our mission of supporting teachers with resources and professional learning that bridge STEM disciplines.

Looking Ahead

The Count Me In team is now preparing to launch a series of online Community Learning Opportunities which will meet quarterly through the school year to continue supporting educators throughout the year. Teachers, researchers, and community leaders interested in participating can sign up HERE.

STAO looks forward to continuing this collaboration and ensuring that science, technology, and mathematics remain connected, accessible, and inspiring for all Ontario learners.
