The Executive Committee is the managing body of STAO and includes the six (6) Officers of the Executive and four (4) Coordinators (Communications, Curriculum, Partnerships, and Professional Development).
The Board of Directors is the governing body of STAO/APSO. The Board consists of five (5) Members-at-large and the six (6) Officers of the Executive Committee (Past President, President, President Elect, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer). The Board meets at least twice a year.
The Finance Committee is a Standing Committee of the STAO organization.
STAO annual conferences enable members and nonmembers to share teaching ideas, resource's and other expertise that they have found to be successful. STAO conferences reinforce the association’s mission of “encouraging excellence in science education through leadership and service”.
- Teachers benefit as they share their expertise and acquire skills and knowledge that they can use in their classrooms;
- Students benefit as exemplary science is implemented in their classrooms;
- Related businesses and service providers benefit as they are able to promote their products to classroom teachers;
- STAO benefits as it uses the financial resources generated by conferences to further the work of the association. Also, the profile of STAO is raised by a successful conference, giving the association both tangible and intangible benefits.
The purposes of the Elementary Curriculum Committee are to promote excellence in the teaching of Science and Technology in the elementary panel, to advise the Executive Committee on matters relating to Science and Technology in the elementary panel and to be the operational arm of the association relating to education in the elementary panel.
The purposes of the External Relations Committee are to seek, develop and maintain relationships with those individuals and organizations who share STAO’s Mission; and to advise the Executive Committee on matters of significance to the committee.
The purposes of the Promotions/Social Media Committee are to raise awareness of the organization to teachers in the elementary, secondary and post-secondary panels, to school boards and to other educational institutions; to promote STAO/APSO as a one-stop-shop for science education; to become the vehicle to link science teachers across Ontario ; and to use social media as a connection tool for members.
The purposes of the Safety Committee are to promote safety in the teaching of Science and Science & Technology; and to advise the Executive Committee on matters relating to safety in the elementary and secondary panels.
The purposes of the ScienceWorks Committee are to advise the Executive Committee on matters relating to all STAO/APSO workshops, and to oversee the development of workshops.
The purposes of the Secondary Curriculum Committee are to promote excellence in the teaching of Science in the secondary panel and to advise the Executive Committee on matters relating to Science in the secondary panel.
The purposes: of the STAO Science Store Committee are to advise the Executive Committee on matters relating to the operation of the STAOScienceStore; to oversee the operation of the STAOScienceStore, and to assist the Manager of the STAOScienceStore in the selection and pricing of inventory.
The purposes of the Website Committee are to oversee all aspects of the website and to advise the Executive Committee on matters relating to the website. These purposes include providing website related direction for resource development projects to ensure web appropriate results are produced and tracking website usage and using intelligence gained to tune website.
The purposes of the Volunteers Committee are to advise the Executive Committee on matters relating to recruitment, retention, and recognition of volunteers, to oversee succession planning of volunteers, and to manage the awards program.
