Biodiversity and Community Science Digital Mapping
This is a free event with hands-on biodiversity activities that engage participants in environmental monitoring to identify species, celebrate, and protect biodiversity in a changing climate. EcoSpark helps participants try out iNaturalist, Seek, and other citizen science apps, and learn tips for sharing nature observations with the community to promote conservation. Our new GeoHub will introduce to participants with digital mapping ideas and tools that can further enhance their work for pollinators.
This event is part of a series joint hosted by EcoSpark and Project Swallowtail.
Meet on the trail at this pinned map location near Fenside Dr. and Brookbanks Dr. Your workshop will take place outdoors in a public park, and EcoSpark staff will meet the group on-site. Crestwood Preparatory College parking lot is usually used by the community and could be an option for parking. It is across the street from our meeting spot at Brookbanks Park.
- Switch to virtual: In the event of extreme weather, staff illness, etc., an engaging comparable session will be provided virtually via remote video conference at the same date and time. Otherwise sessions take place rain or shine, participants should dress for the weather.
- Equipment to bring: Please dress for the weather, and bring a personal water bottle. EcoSpark will provide scientific equipment (binoculars, etc. as applicable) for the nature investigation. Tablets or devices and/or pencil and paper are suggested but not required. Participants may want to bring devices to photograph insects and plants as we conduct surveys at the site. Optionally participants may download the Seek app to assist with field ID.
- Free iNaturalist Account: Consider creating an iNaturalist account on behalf of your group or register individually, and join EcoSpark’s iNaturalist project page. Nature images by participants can be submitted via the Seek app or manually, to help us collect useful ecological field data during your Park Watch session.
