The Future City Showcase

Submitted by Michael Frankfort, Co-Chair of the STAO Elementary Curriculum Committee

Over 2500 students in grade 6-8 from across Canada have signed up to participate in the Future City Experience this year. The objective of the Future City program is to inspire youths’ interest in engineering via a hands-on project-based learning program that is integrated into the middle school curriculum. Grade 6 to 8 students create cities that exist at least 100 years in the future by applying the engineering design process and specific project management methods. Students’ work is overseen by an educator and STEM mentor to meet project deliverables that include experimenting with city design,  researching and designing a solution to a city-wide issue and building a scale model of their city using recycled materials.

This year, students will present their Future City models during an online National Showcase event May 11th, 2022.

This invitation is extended to educators from across Canada to invite more youth to learn about the science and engineering involved in designing and building a Future City model and raise awareness about the program.

Participating students will present their Future City models to a panel of engineering experts and receive live feedback. This virtual event will also include opportunities for all students and educators to learn from industry experts, explore interactive STEM outreach tools, and connect with others through interactive online learning games.

The event is hosted in partnership with Ontario Tech University, Engineers of Tomorrow, and Engineers Canada.

The event will feature special keynote speaker (Astronaut Joshua Kutryk) and include accessible resources for students and educators to continue STEM learning after the event.
