Call for Participants for a Summer Writing Project:
Integrating Environmental Education into Elementary and Secondary Science Classrooms

STAO will be working collaboratively with OTF to develop an elementary and a secondary resource and workshop that use an inquiry-led approach to learning to integrate environmental education into science curriculum.

The workshops and resources developed will:
  • continue to raise awareness and implement the Ministry of Education's Environmental Education Policy Framework, Shaping Our Schools, Shaping Our Future;
  • offer teachers strategies to support an inquiry-based approach to student learning in, about and for the environment within the context of their discipline;
  • identify curriculum connections and opportunities for integration of environmental education within the elementary science & technology and secondary science curriculum;
  • include best-practice strategies and tools for effective instruction; * align with the Ministry of Education's assessment and evaluation policy outlined in the Growing Success document;
  • deepen environmental literacy and support elementary and secondary science teachers in promoting student engagement through environmental stewardship, and;
  • encourage partnerships with environmental education providers and community environmental organizations.
     

ELEMENTARY Writing Project

A resource and a workshop will be developed to support the junior level, with a focus on the Grade 6 Understanding Life Systems Biodiversity strand. Connections will be made with the new Social Science curriculum. Applicants should have experience teaching Grades 4 to 6 Science and Technology curriculum and knowledge of strategies and/or experience integrating environmental education into the curriculum. SECONDARY Writing Project

A resource will be developed that provides a variety of strategies for integrating environmental education principles/themes into a teacher's science curriculum and school community. The resource will serve to enhance environmental literacy and support secondary teachers in promoting student engagement through environmental stewardship, and encourage partnerships with environmental education providers and community environmental organizations. There will be an emphasis on experiential strategies that take students outdoors to enhance their learning. Writer Application
 

PROJECT MANAGER

Overseeing the writing, reviewing, editing, and publishing of the resource and workshop will be the responsibility of the Project Manager. The successful candidate will be a member of STAO/APSO and will have experience in the managing of resource development projects. A stipend will be paid to the Project Manager. Manager Application
 

Information for Applicants for this Summer Writing Project

STAO/APSO will select two teams of three to four members who will work under the direction of a Project Manager to develop the elementary project and secondary projects as described above. Writers selected will be informed by July 6, 2012. A planning meeting will be held in Toronto on July 20, 2012. The purpose of the meeting will be to identify the general content of the resource and its format. Travel expenses will be paid to attend this meeting. Writing will occur during the months of July and August. The resource and workshop will be ready for release at the STAO2012 conference in November 2012. An honorarium will be paid for participation in the writing team. Writers must be members of STAO/APSO
